Remembering Steve Heilman

Very sorry to have to report of the passing this morning of Steve Heilmann who was a great gunmaker and an even better friend.

“I have never known another individual who had the ability to brighten one’s day as Steve could, and I spent many hours in his shop perking up as we chatted away his precious work time; he had no complaint or indication that I was so doing.
Fellow gunmakers and hobbyist friends always had his full attention when discussing any technical problem, technique, or topic of interest, whether related to firearms or not. Steve was willing to share his knowledge with those who asked, and an honest appraisal of work shown to him for review was always forthcoming.
He took great pride in his 40-year membership in the ACGG and served the Guild in official positions over the years. He often donated items to the annual auction and showed his dedicated support by attending the annual show for 30 years. His exhibited rifles and an exquisite assortment of stock blanks always attracted fellow members, clients, both prior and prospective, and knowledgeable enthusiasts who appreciated the skills, artistry, and fine wood on display.
At the shows, Steve was always eager to see old friends and catch up on family life, new ideas, and general chit-chat. He also made time to visit the displays of his fellow guild members to marvel at the quality of their work. Of course, a funny story or personal anecdote recounted always brought his personality and humor to full flower during the ensuing conversations.
Generous with his love, generous with his friendship, generous with his time, Steve made the world for those of us who knew him a far better place. His kind, gentle manner belied a sharp wit, a devilish humor, and a quick and clever mind knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects.
His decades-long marriage to his wife, Cheri, gave Steve great happiness and joy. His devotion and attention to her were unmatched, and together, they enjoyed many road trips in their small motor home, always accompanied by their canine family members.
As we mourn the passing of an extraordinary human being, we remember all the wonderful qualities Steve exhibited and cherish the memories of the happy times we spent together. He certainly led by example and has shown us the path to follow.”
